One Year Ago Today, We Were Dancing The Hora

Do you remember what you were doing exactly one year ago today?

I was wearing sky high heels and dancing the hora.

Although I can hardly believe it, today is the one-year anniversary of Junior Goo Shoes' Bar Mitzvah!

It was a weekend-long celebration.  The service was on Saturday, October 13, and the party was the next day.

For the two years prior, all I did was obsess over every single detail of the service and the party...

...all while working at a full-time job.

And now, today, EXACTLY ONE YEAR after the big event that was truly second to Moses receiving the Ten Commandments (at least in our minds), I finally picked up the sacred Bar Mitzvah photo album from the photographer.

Yes, somehow, without a job to blame my lack of productivity on, it took me ten months to focus on the one remaining post-Bar Mitzvah project -- to select the photos for his album -- and then it took another two months for the photographer to print it.

Junior Goo Shoes has changed so much in this past year, he bears little resemblance to the 13-year old boy with braces in the Bar Mitzvah photos.

Anyhow, it's been fun looking at all the pictures and remembering all of the planning... and headaches...that led up to a truly memorable weekend.

When Junior Goo Shoes was looking through the album as we were driving home today, he said,

"Mom! How could you not notice that I have tomato sauce
on my face in all of the temple pictures?'

At which point i nearly skid off the road.

"WHAT??? Are you kidding me?

"JK!  Gotcha good, Mom!"

I guess he was on a roll, or maybe he just wanted to see another driver flip me the bird for veering out of my lane, because he said...

"I know the secret to having a great smile in pictures.
You just have to pretend that you are laughing.
That makes it look natural, instead of DORKY."

"Oh, Junior GS, you don't have to worry about that. You have a beautiful smile."

"I know. I was talking about YOU, Mom!"

But back to what was really important...

The album is beautiful.  It took us right back to one of the best weekends of our lives.

Junior Goo Shoes rocked his Torah portion at the service...

He truly made us proud.

We celebrated with a fantastic party.

We all had a wonderful time, especially Junior Goo Shoes.

And best of all, our family and close friends were there to celebrate with us.

There is another project, actually, that I haven't gotten to, which is to make my own digital photo book of the Bar Mitzvah weekend. I am the Queen of Digital Photobooks...

...Or, at least, I was.

Some may say that I've been too busy blogging to work on my photo books...

...and they would be correct :)

At this rate, I will finish them when JGS leaves for college. Oy vey.

  4. He does have a good sense of humor and sounds like he also has a good relationship with his mom. I have never been to a Bar Mitzvah and loved seeing and reading about your son's. I can tell you're very proud of him and he should be proud of his organized mom with the great legs!

    1. Oh, Dewena, if only I was still that organized! Ever since I left my job, I feel like I'm such a scatter-brain! And, yes, we are so proud of him!

  6. Love the shoes! If it's any consolation, I was recently called to task for having finished an album and a scrapbook for the oldest child, while the youngest has pictures that are still on the memory card--just part of being a busy mom!

  7. A wonderful and memorable celebration of a very important day! Everyone looks like they're having a so much fun; I can hear the music! Amy, it sounds that you are discovering yet another characteristic of being a stay-at-home mom: when you have all the time in the world to get things done, deadlines disappear and so do your targets! Right? I need to be even more focused now, since leaving tutoring behind, and I don't have a teenage son to tend to either!

    A fun post!

    1. Nothing could be more true, Poppy! Yes, deadlines mean nothing when "there's always tomorrow." Not at all like my former organized self! It was a wonderful party...glad you could hear the music!

  8. It is funny how much time you spend prior to an event to make it perfect and then all of a sudden it is 1 year since it happened. It's fun that you got the book so much later to bring the memories to the front of your mind.

  10. What a great celebration! If I wore heels like those I'd hurt myself - seriously! I do admire them though.

    1. I did feel the after-effects of those pumps, but while I had them on, surprisingly OK! I had a back-up pair in reserve in case I couldn't take it ;)
