Roasted Pear Salad With White Balsamic Vinaigrette: An Oldie But Goodie...and the Moon!

What do you like better -- apples or pears?

I love crisp apples, but when pears are at that perfect state of ripeness,
man, they are hard to beat.
The only thing better than a perfectly ripe pear is a perfectly ripe roasted pear.
And the only thing better than that is a perfectly ripe roasted pear in a salad.
YUM!

I'm bringing back an oldie but goodie fall recipe from my early days of blogging,
which was many moons ago, so chances are, you haven't seen it.
The pictures aren't great, but the recipe is.
Click here to see how to make it.
It takes a little time to prepare, because you have to roast the pears,
so I make it only once in a "blood" moon.

How's that for a segue?

Were you able to see the blood moon?
It was spectacular!
We got so lucky -- the sky was clear until the the moon was totally eclipsed,
and then, the clouds rolled in.

Not bad, eh?

Don't forget to check out the salad recipe
I promise you'll be over the moon in love with it!

Jord Wooden Watches: A Trendy Fashion Accessory For Fall

Disclosure: I was sent a wooden watch by Jord in exchange for an honest review.
All opinions are my own. No other compensation was received.

Jord Wooden Watch | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes #jordwatch

You know how you have some friends that you can take anywhere,
and they'll fit right in?
The friends that are as equally at home at a hoe-down as they are at the opera?
That's kind of how I feel about my new wooden watch.
Pair it with jeans and cowboy boots, and we're ready for the rodeo.
Team it up with pearls and pumps,
and we're off to the opening at the art gallery.

Jord Wooden Watch | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes #jordwatch

When I was given the opportunity to receive a Jord wood watch
I just assumed I'd choose something for one of my boys,
thinking that wood = masculine.
But when I checked out the #jordwatch tab on their website,
and saw how absolutely stylin' they looked on women,
I decided to be completely selfish, and order one for me.
Wooden watches are a hot fashion trend right now, yet,
Jord's watch designs remain classic enough that it's unlikely they'll go out of style.

I have to tell you, choosing a watch was a tough decision!
The are dozens of styles in the collection, with eight woods to choose from,
ranging from bamboo, to koa, to zebrawood, as well as many different face colors.

First, I was crushing the Cora in Maple and Lavender, with it's bright pop of color.
But, with autumn around the corner, I thought the Sydney Maple and Rose Gold
would be a more neutral accessory in my fall wardrobe.
The glint of Swarovski crystals around the bezel caught my eye,
and because I'm all about that bling, 'bout that bling...
I knew it had my name on it.

I was pretty excited when my watch arrived in the mail.
It came two days before my birthday (Happy Birthday present to me)!

Sydney Women's Watch in Maple and Rose Gold

The watch was packaged in a handsome wooden box,
resting securely around a herringbone pillow.
It makes for a great presentation, when giving as a gift.
I was impressed by how rich the watch looked --
the photos on the website were accurate in their depiction.

I opted to have Jord size the watch for me before shipping,
by following instructions on their website on how to measure.
Mine was still a little big, so I needed another link removed by a jeweler.
Jord does send you the extra links, by the way, in case it ever needs to be adjusted.

I was so happy I chose the rose gold face.
The light wood, and the shiny face is a pleasing combination of color and texture.
The face changes hue in different lighting...
sometimes it's pale gold, and other times, it's a deeper rose.
Would you look at that face?
Is that a face?

Oh, and Sadie is cute, too, isn't she?

Jord Wooden Watch | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes #jordwatch

I was laying in bed one night thinking about how great the watch would look
with different pieces in my fall wardrobe
(yes, this is my idea of FUN!).
Sometimes I think about decorating my house,
other times I think about decorating myself :)

Pairing it with denim is a given...

Jord Wooden Watch | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes #jordwatch

But it's equally comfortable rubbing shoulders (wrists?) with velvet...

or pearls...

 heels...

and leather!

Jord Wooden Watch | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes #jordwatch

Pretty versatile, huh?
I think my other watches might be jealous.

The watch is surprisingly lightweight, making it extremely comfortable to wear.
Jord watch bands are made of aged hardwoods, and sealed with natural oil extracts.
The watch movements are shock resistant, and crystals are scratch-resistant,
which is good for me, since I'm a bit of a clutz.
It's also splash-proof, but I wouldn't recommend wearing it while washing the dishes.

Jord Wooden Watch | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes #jordwatch

There are some deets you should know:
Jord is an automatic watch, which means it requires an initial winding.
After that, regular daily activity should be enough to keep it wound,

if it's worn for at least eight hours a day
(I haven't worn mine daily, and it hasn't needed winding).
It's also suggested that the watch be cleaned with a lemon or orange oil extract.
So not only will it look good, it will smell good, too!
And, if you want to maintain the natural patina,
butcher block oil or beeswax can be applied.
I think I just may let mine age gracefully.

Jord Wooden Watch | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes #jordwatch

The first time I took my watch out for a spin,
my manicurist complimented me on it.
Then...the lady in the post office.
And the salesperson in Nordstroms.
Oh, yeah, the cashier at the supermarket.
Plus a few of my friends.

Compliments galore.

It's a real conversation time-piece.

Jord Wooden Watch | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes #jordwatch

I absolutely love my Jord watch!
Truthfully? Even more than I expected to.
Wearing it is like carrying a little piece of nature around with me on my wrist.
Who new Mother Nature was a fashionista?

BEST OF THE WEEKEND and The Last Weekend of Summer!

Hey Hey! So glad to see you here at Best of the Weekend!
It's officially the last weekend of summer.
I've got to admit, I'm in complete denial.
Not that I don't love fall -- I do!
I mean, what's not to like -- pumpkin-everything, cooler temperatures,

candy corn (yes, especially the candy corn).
If fall was followed by spring, I'd be a little less glum about summer ending,
but, unless we move in the next three months, I've got to accept the fact that
WINTER IS COMING.
 Blah.

Good thing we've got our link party tonight to cheer me up!

Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie Cake

Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie Cake: Tastes so good, especially while still warm out of the oven! | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes

A big welcome to all of my new followers!
Thank you so much for hitting the "Subscribe" button --
I am grateful to each and every one of you!

***************
Can I spill it about my skillet?
I'm in love!

I seem to have an abnormal attraction to baking paraphernalia.

I'm enchanted with my donut pan;
I'm nuts about my jumbo muffin tin;
and, I'm besotted with my cookie cake pan.

My 10" ovenproof non-stick shiny red skillet is my newest infatuation.
I bought it at Home Goods a few months ago
(the brand is Cuisinart, by the way),
and then, it sat in the cabinet all summer, until just recently.
Now, I want to make make anything and everything in my skillet...

Frittatas
Pizzas
Stir Fries
Pasta
Pies
Potatoes
Veggies
Cobblers
Pancakes
Steaks
Quesadillas

Should I go on?

For Junior Goo Shoes' birthday, I wanted to make him a cake
that would put a big smile on his face.
I had it in my head that a deep dish skillet cookie cake would be just right.
(I did feel like I was cheating on my cookie cake pan,
but I really wanted to use that skillet).

I headed over to my Pinterest skillet board to see what I could find.

This recipe from Ree Drummond was right on the money.

And, it did put a big smile on Junior Goo Shoes' face!
(Mr. Goo Shoes, was even bigger, if you want to know the truth).
When the cookie was gone, I made another one this past weekend,
scoring big points with Junior GS.

He asked if I thought it would get as many pins as my Brookies

Before you get too impressed that he even knows what a "pin" is,
this is why he asked:

Awhile back, I was kind of talking to myself, and said,
"Wow, I sure hope my Brookies reach 2,000 pins."
Junior GS wanted to know what that meant,
so I explained the whole Pinterest thing.

"If your Brookies get to 2,000, will you buy me something?"

Wha-HUH???

"Well, I was the taste-tester, and if it wasn't for me,
you wouldn't have known if they were good,
and you wouldn't have gotten as many pins."

Nice try, Junior GS, nice try.

Here are a few things I learned from making this twice:

A couple of the reviewers on the original recipe site suggested
lowering the temperature to 340°and baking about 10 minutes longer.
This would keep the center from being under-cooked,
and the edges from being over-cooked.
I took their advice both times, and it came out perfectly.
All ovens are different, though, so I can't tell you exactly how long to bake it.

This also assumes you are using a 10-inch skillet.

During the last five or ten minutes,
I did cover the cookie cake loosely with a piece of foil
to keep it from getting too brown around the edges.

This tastes best when it is still warm from the oven.
However, it is still delicious a few days later,
especially if you warm a slice for about 20 seconds in the microwave.

Personally, I think it would be too sweet with milk chocolate chips,
so I used only semi-sweet.
But, that's just me.

Of course, the ice cream and hot fudge are optional,
but they are highly recommended!

Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie Cake: Tastes so good, especially while still warm out of the oven! | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes

Ingredients:
2 sticks butter, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 heaping teaspoons instant coffee granules
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk chocolate chips
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (I used 2 cups semi-sweet chips and omitted the milk chocolate .)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°.
Cream together butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar in a large bowl.
Add vanilla and eggs, mixing well.
Combine flour, instant coffee granules, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in 3 batches, mixing after each one.
Stir in the chocolate chips.

Spread mixture into a 10-inch skillet and bake until golden brown, 30 to 40 minutes (*I baked at 340°for about 50 minutes after reading some reviews on the original recipe).
Serve when still warm.
Top with ice cream (optional, but highly recommended!).
