Welcome To My New Blog!

A Mom's Metamorphosis From Full-Time Career To Staying At Home

Today is the premiere of my new blog, "Ms. Toody Goo Shoes."  I hope you will enjoy my perspective on what it's like to transition from a full-time career in the television industry, to becoming an at-home mom. I've re-set the clock from "if I only had time" to "now that I have time, what will I do?" Will I be able to cut it as a car-pooler?  Will I champion a new cause and make the world a better place? Will I really keep my house spotless, and go to Zumba everyday? I have no idea what I'll discover on this "what's next" journey, but as we said in TV land ... stay tuned!

METAMORPHOSIS
meta·mor·pho·sis (noun)
1. a striking alteration in appearance, character, or circumstances, as from the caterpillar to adult butterfly;or from working mom to stay-at-home mom.

A few months ago, I handed in my keys to the corner office, and walked away from the corporate world.  For 30+ years, I was an executive at a popular TV network, where I decided what time some of your favorite shows would air.  I got to do some pretty cool stuff, like meet famous people and walk the red carpet, but it was time to move on.

The idea of leaving a life-long career was exhilarating…and terrifying. Talk about having butterflies in your stomach!  I needed to let go of my old life, to see who I might become. Everyone told me I had to reinvent myself, but I wasn’t ready.  All I wanted to do was clean out every closet in my house.

Storage room before I left work :(

Storage room after I left work :)

Now that I am not rushing off to catch the 7:52 every morning, I decided to write about my "ME"tamorphosis from career mom, to at-home mom.  This is both a chronicle of my transition, and frankly, an excuse to write about the stuff I always wished I had more time to do when I was working.  It’s about knocking things off my to-do list while I meander down the path of self-discovery…I like to think of Ms. Toody Goo Shoes as a cross between soul-searching and re-arranging the furniture.

I’m allowing myself lots of leeway to write about anything and everything that piques my interest. Most of the time, that will mean things I'm doing to fix up my house, travel, healthy living, and lots of "F" words: Family, Food, Fashion, Football, Fotos and Fun stuff. I don’t profess to be an expert in any of this...these are simply things that interest me. It’s a bit self-indulgent, honestly, but after three decades of all work and not much time to play, I’m looking forward to spending quality time with my guilty pleasures.

About now, you are probably wondering just what does the name Ms. Toody Goo Shoes have to do with all of this, anyway? Honestly, not much Years ago, my best friend meant to call me “Miss Goody Two-Shoes,” but it came out as “Miss Toody Goo Shoes.”  It stuck, and has been a part of our personal vernacular for the last 20 years, so much so, that it takes real concentration for us to say it the right way.  Where “Miss Goody Two Shoes” refers to someone who follows the rules and acts perfectly all the time, Ms. Toody Goo Shoes suggests that there is room for imperfection, and that none of this should be taken too seriously.  While I consider myself to be someone who plays by the rules, I surely don't always act perfectly (nor do I want to!), so I need to give myself some elbow room to allow for a few flaws.

I hope you'll stop by often to see how I am doing on my journey to becoming what I might be.  If not for that, then hopefully you'll be check in to see how I've been re-arranging the furniture.

Some Quick Facts About Me:

I’ve been married for 18 years to a great guy, and I had my only child late in life. I am the mother of an awesome 13-year old son, who can lift me up and carry me around like I’m a bag of marshmallows. We have a cockapoo named Sadie. I was born and raised in New Jersey, lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for 22 years, and once again, call NJ home. I love travel, cheese, shoes, the NY Giants, shopping, avocados, shoes, decorating magazines, making digital photo books, baking, writing and...have I mentioned shoes?

  2. I too had left my job at a high rise corner office that has a beautiful city view. But thank god my office was decorated as a cold and boring space that means hardcore stressful work and long insane working hours. So I don't miss it. I was really not there that often because most of the time I was on business trips visiting various companies and businesses. TV networks and film studios are some of them. But when I was there, I was buried with files and paper in a conference room. I didn't get to talk to famous people or attend red carpet. Instead, I got to see their names on those papers and the money they make.... So I don't miss my old job, not one bit because I was sick and tired of working on stressful stuff in the background that involves big bucks and yet nobody ever appreciates it because it was in the background. But if I had a job like yours and living room look alike office, I would never give it up, ever. So now, I am looking for a job that is more front of the house instead.... But if I can't find it, I probably will return to my old profession. Until then, I am moping at home and reading domestic blogs for a change.

    1. My job was sort of background stuff, too, but it did come with some great perks and chances to go to fun events. And although it looked like a living room, I still had to WORK in it :) Instead of lounging around reading magazines, like I might at home, I had to fend off the deadly sharks who sat on those couches! I'm happy to be out of that stressful world! Good luck with your job search!

  3. Amy, When I find a blog I like, I sometimes go back and read it from the beginning (too much free time on my hands I guess). I came across your very first post ever and can't wait to read more about your MEtamorphosis. I am loving all the flat belly recipes of late, but am equally excited read backwards and to see how it was along the way!
