Candy Crush Saga: Bring on the Trick-or-Treaters!

Candy Crush Saga: Bring on the Trick-or-Treaters -by Ms. Toody Goo Shoes

I just had to do an update to this post!  Talk about Candy Crush...we went through all 260 bags in under two hours! The "Out of Candy" sign is on the door, and it's still going strong out there. I could have probably gone through twice that.  And, if you think that's crazy, I got it from the source that The Candy Man gave out 1800 bags! That's right, 1800!!! Can you imagine that????

Do you get a lot of Trick-or-Treaters?

Years ago, when we lived in NYC, our doorbell rang maybe half a dozen times.

But now, about 200 kids come to our door every Halloween.

Most of the kids in town come to our neighborhood to do their trick-or-treating for one simple reason...

The Candy Man........

No, not the one that Sammy Davis, Jr. sang about:

"Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew...
Cover it with choc'late and a miracle or two
."

I'm talking about the one who lives around the corner, and works for a candy company.

The one who gives each kid a brown paper bag filled with huge candy bars.

The one who is the "Most Popular Guy" on Halloween in these parts.

Rumor has it that he gives away 500 bags of candy.  I've even heard as many as 1200, but I doubt that. All I do know is that the police have to set up barricades, and close the streets to car traffic.

For years, the other big draw in the neighborhood has been The Donut Man, who gave each kid a box of Entenmann's doughnuts. The other day when I was walking Sadie, I saw this sign on the lawn.

I can see why they would put this sign out on Halloween, but I can't help but wonder why they had to put it out 5 days in advance.  Maybe it's just me, but it almost seems like they're saying, "Go trick-or-treat somewhere else."  Bah, humbug.  I don't know.......

Anyway, between The Candy Man and The Donut Man, we've always gotten tons of kids.

The Candy Crush comes mostly between 3:00pm and 6:00pm.

By dinner time, we've had to put up the "Sorry, We Ran Out of Candy" sign, after handing out 200 bags. I always felt terrible, and hated disappointing the kids.

So, this year, we want to make sure that every Power Ranger, Princess Ariel and Angry Bird get their treats, so Junior Goo Shoes and I made 260 candy bags to hand out. That's a record for us!

Hmmm, I wonder if they call me The Bag Lady.......

Making all of those bags and not eating any of the candy took its toll on Junior GS.

But we are READY!

We've got our Haunted Mailbox...

Little Miss Witch...

and our pumpkins.......

We'll see what happens with the Candy Crush Saga now that the Donut Man is out of the equation.

I sure hope we don't get stuck with all this candy.

  1. Oh, I remember when my girls were kids. I recall sneaking pieces of candy from the time I bought the bags until Halloween. Then if there was some left over, eating it some more. Always gained a pound of two around that time. Enjoyed your stories!

    1. I can relate, Brenda! I hid the candy from everyone else, but I sneak a piece every now and then, too! And when Junior Goo Shoes brings home his loot, I sneak some of his, too!

  2. Wow, that is a lot of candy. We don't get any trick or treaters. Our street is too busy. We did get a lot in our old house when the kids were little. I miss those days.

    1. I miss the days of walking around the neighborhood with Junior Goo Shoes, when he was little, and so excited for Halloween. He's still excited, but in a whole different way. I miss those days, too!

  3. That is a LOT of candy to hand out. We don't get ANY trick-or-treaters here but we go to my daughter's area and they get tons of them. Love the story about The Candy Man and The Donut man, too. Sorry that he moved!

Yep- pretty sure they will be calling you The Bag Lady! xo Diana

  4. Is it common to hand out little satchels of candy where you are? I have always handed out the candy piece by piece (usually allowing kids to take about 3 of the 'fun' sized bars).

    1. It's more common to hand it out piece by piece, but when I was a kid, I always thought the bags were the best! I thought I hit the jackpot! Truth is, they have the same 3-4 pieces as your way ...Don't tell the kids;)

  6. I used to get over 100 kids, but it has dropped down to about 40-50. I worry every year that I will run out, and not sure the kids will take it in stride, they will have to do some "tricks" then! But you certainly have had some very generous neighbors there!

    1. I know, I always felt bad when the kids rang the bell and I had to either ignore it or 'fess up and tell them I ran out. They always look so disappointed. I hope we get rid of all the bags, though, since we made more this year!

  7. Oh that's funny! We used to get a lot of trick or treaters, but our subdivision is aging and so are the kids in it. So there are fewer each year. My 12 yr old son will go tomorrow night though. You really DO get a lot of trick or treaters! That's fun to have a lot of kids come to your door. It always feels like a big party when there are so many in the streets, doesn't it? Yours come early. Do your schools close for the day? My son doesn't get home till almost 5:00, so we usually wait till after dark to go out.

    1. Yes, Kelly, I love the party atmosphere, and it is so sweet to see how excited the little ones are. Schools don't close until almost 3, but as soon as they do, the kids start hitting the streets. The schools have parades, so the younger kids are already in costume and raring to go. We have a town curfew of 8pm, so most come before dinner. Some of the older kids come in the evening. Hope your son will have a blast!

  8. Look at all that candy! Too bad you live so far away. I'd throw on a costume and knock on your door - lol! I love Halloween so I'm loving your decorations :)

  9. LOL now that is a LOT of candy, Amy! We might have already had to replenish some of our supply. ::ahem::
The guy two doors down from my Husband's family home in Boston just recently retired from Nabisco after 40 years. I wonder if there is a "Cookie Man Has Retired" sign??

    1. Haha, Claire! I have hid the candy from the family, but that hasn't stopped me from...partaking! Ah, the Cookie Man would create quite a sensation! Hope he gets retirement benefits in the form of cookies!

  10. Wow, that's some good candy! My little girl wanted to go to your house, but I told her that was a bit far. The older kids hoard their candy, but the younger ones have to share with mom and dad! I also love those fall colors! Dee :)

  12. For the first time since I moved to the cottage, I won't be home for Halloween night and two of my neighbours have already told me how sorry their children are as I was one of the only one to have candy when they rang the bell!

  13. Oh! Your street looks so beautiful with the fall colors. I miss N.Y. in the fall. 200 trick or treaters is a bunch. I hope you have enough candy. Did Entenmanns go out of business? Maybe they just pulled out of Texas. I miss their coffee cake. Enough rambling. You and Jr. have fun tonight.

    1. I did run out of candy -- in record time -- under 2 hours! Entenmanns is still in business, up here at least. Happy Halloween!

  14. "Cover it with chocolate" sounds good to me! You would have been on my favorite streets secret list too. Your little witch and lit-up pumpkin are cute as can be, and so is your best helper, even if he's hiding his face!

We haven't had any trick-or-treaters in years due to living in the country and a long, long driveway but I wish we did. It would be so much fun! Of course, I'd be stuck having to hand out money since I no longer buy candy. Do kids still take nickels or would they throw it on the ground?

    1. If they're anything like my son, they'd take it! When he was younger, he had no understanding of the value of each coin - Money was Money! He was have happily accepted it. We had a great time - but ran out of candy in record time -- under two hours. I felt bad disappointing the kids who came later.

  15. 'The bag lady'...you crack me up!

Have fun! I know I would, with all my favourite American chocolate bars, (as we say in Canadian speak!). Candy to a Canadian means lollipops, jawbreakers and candy canes! No matter to me, my taste buds won't discriminate against a decadent dose of sweetness when they see one!

    Happy Hallows' Eve!

PS: Love your haunted mailbox! Almost thought it was cotton candy there for a second!

  16. How fun :) We haven't had any kids come to our house since we moved here but we always have a bucket just encase. That is pretty cool that the people in your neighborhood give out such great treats. It is stuff like that that kids will remember for a long time :) Too bad the donut man moved.. lol. Hopefully he keeps up his traditional where ever he moved to!

    1. I think the Donut man is in a retirement community, LOL! I agree, the kids will tell their kids someday about the Candy Man. My friend, who helps them prepare the candy bags, said they packed 1800 this year!!! I can't even imagine that!

  17. That is amazing! My kids still talk about the one house that gives out full size candy bars. And the house that didn't have any candy and gave the kids dollar bills. We only got one trick or treater this year. :(

    1. I know , it's crazy! My friend helps hand out the bags, and she said last year they ran out after 1700 bags, so they made an extra hundred this year! I said we could probably give out double next year -- 500 -- you should have seen the look my husband gave me! Hope your kids had a Happy Halloween!

  18. I can totally relate to "the doughnut man has moved" sign :) we have 3 small children and they go to bed at 7.30pm. So lights are turned off and I can finally sit down after a long day of chasing them around. Also, it doesn't help that our 2 dogs constantly bark at thrick or treaters, so we have to coop them up as well. I guess I dread Halloween night. lol

  19. Wow, you live in a FUN neighborhood! We had about 100 trick or treaters...and one little girl and boy came back for seconds!
