"Deck-orating" For Fall...Finally

Outdoor Fall Decor by Ms. Toody Goo Shoes

Are you still into the Autumn spirit, or have you moved on to planning your Thanksgiving dinner menus?

Outdoor Fall Decor by Ms. Toody Goo Shoes

Honestly, I'm just getting into the mood for Fall. It's been very warm here since the calendar said Fall arrived, and until recently, the leaves were still mostly green.

I mean, it's hard to feel Autumnal when I'm still wearing shorts and flip flops... and suffering from humidity-driven "bad hair" days.

So, I am actually trying...yes trying...to be the very last blogger to show off my Fall decor.

There's another reason, if you must know.

I'm too cheap to buy a bunch of pumpkins and mums just to do an early blog post, and then have to replace them later in the fall.

If I started my fall decorating according the the Bloggers' calendar...like late August/early September, my mums would be dead, and the pumpkins would rot well before Halloween.

I like my outdoor fall decor to last till Thanksgiving, so I restrain myself from buying anything until the last weekend in September, at the earliest.

And I do mean, restrain myself.

Do you know how hard it is to go to the supermarket, and see the most beautiful mums... at "3 for $10"...and not buy any???

It's TORTURE, I tell you!

Do you know how many times I almost gave in?

But I didn't...

So now, while you are probably pulling out your stuffing recipes and Thanksgiving platters, you'll need to bear with me, as I've finally gotten my back deck all spruced up for Fall.

I think it looks its absolute finest in Fall. Once all of the leaves are at their peak colors, they will be a perfect backdrop to the furniture, pillows and flowers.

You may remember that we did some work on the deck this spring. It was the "Year of the Deck," and I was determined to get it fully "deck-orated."

When I finally decided on pillows, part of the reason was because I knew they'd look great in Fall, as well as Spring and Summer. My goal was to have the deck be my three-season "Happy Place."

Yes, it will be a little chilly, but I'll bring out a platter of doughnuts, with some hot apple cider, rather than watermelon and lemonade...

...I'll need a sweater instead of a tank top...

...socks in place of sandals...

Oh, and some chain mail and armor...because...do you know how much it hurts to  get pelted with falling acorns?

Ouch.

I've got company coming this weekend, and I'm hoping to be able to serve one more round appetizers on the deck.  The forecast doesn't look promising, though...

But if it's glorious, I'll be ready!

  4. You are cracking me up. You are not the last one. I just bought pumpkins last weekend. I started to work on my deck and we finally got some much needed rain. I love your deck. Beautiful mums. My favorite are the stacks of pumpkins and apples in the lanterns.

    1. We got some rain yesterday, too. More is forecast but I am crossing my fingers that Saturday will be clear. Glad I am not the only one first decorating for fall!

  5. Your deck looks beautiful. REALLY pretty. I don't do my stuff until this time either, Amy. I want my stuff to last until Thanksgiving, too. You did a great job-Fall has arrived at your place! xo Diana

  6. Your deck looks gorgeous! I'm pathetic. I never get any of this done. We hardly even see our house during the fall soccer season!

    1. My son gave up soccer a couple of years ago, so fall is now much more "free." It's not easy shlepping the kids all over the earth for sports!

  7. Bloggers' calendar? Never heard about it! No wonder no one reads my blog!!! ;-)
Wonderful deck-job, though, love it! Reminds me of our wooden deck in my former DC home, makes me a bit nostalgic, but I'll refrain from decorating around here. Somehow I like to swindle my way into Christmas season with the white covers still on the sofas.
My family decided to give in to my wish of celebrating Thanksgiving the Saturday before the fourth Thursday in November, the more time to prepare for Christmas season the weekend after (no Thanksgiving holiday around here).
Wishing you beautiful autumn days to celebrate the season out on your deck,
    Merisi

  8. I don't start early either. When my flowers outside are all done, and it is cool weather, and the leaves are turning colors, then it is time : ) Your deck looks great and I hope you have many mild days to enjoy it out there :)

  9. You are skirting dangerously close to being a very good decorating blog - watch out!
The deck looks like a lovely place to sit on a fall afternoon, so I hope the weather cooperates for you.
Like you, I wait to decorate for the seasons/holidays. Our Thanksgiving up here is next week, and then I'll leave the fall things out until December 1st. The rest of Blogdom will have Christmas all up by early November, but not this blogger!

  12. Amy, your outdoor living space is, indeed, all decked out in the season's finest colours and patterns, representative both in living and inanimate ambience! Your fall, floral cushions are charming against the soft neutral upholstery and all your accents add warmth and familiarity to this lovely and relaxing outdoor scene. You might want to serve your appetizers out here, but I'd stay there the whole evening, right up until dessert! Gorgeous and worth the wait!

    1. You are the kind of guest I'd like to have, Poppy! One who doesn't want to head inside as soon as it gets a little cool. I only wish I could have a fire pit in order to linger longer outdoors, but I haven't figured out how to make that work on a wooden deck!

  13. 1) Love your post title!
    2) Love your deck-orating.
    3) Hate it when people show you their fall decorating in July!
    4) Haven't begun fall decorating yet as we're having the most perfect Indian summer here and weather dictates me what to do, not blogs.
    5) I can hear an owl in the garden nearly every night and that's all the Hallowe'en decoration that's been going on so far at my cottage!

    1. Thanks for 1 and 2, Magali! I would love to hear an owl in my garden. It's a rare thing around here, but I did get to see one once. Do you ever see your owl, or just hear it? I'd love to see pictures, if you do!

  24. I so agree about waiting until it is cooler to decorate outside for fall. Your outdoor setting is the perfect spot to side and enjoy the fall decoration of mums and pumpkins. The pillows certainly are a pretty choice for three seasons. Have a great week!

  25. Hi Amy, I've been all over your yard and home...took the tour! Your home is gorgeous and the deck and woods are, too. I just blogged last week about being in New Jersey....Lambertville! That mirror that I didn't justify buying ...I don't need it! I am mirror crazy, but that federal mirror, I have a feeling you know what I mean. Also, about a month ago, I decided I'm going to be ready for Christmas and go with red, green, and gold colors when I redo rooms. Thanks for the fun stop!
