I'm Still Wearing Flip Flops, but my Front Porch is Dressed For Fall

Fall Front Porch by Ms. Toody Goo Shoes
What is your favorite season to decorate your front porch?

Mine is definitely fall.  Although when spring comes, I'm chomping at the bit to add some color to the porch after a long, bare winter. I just think my porch looks best dressed in autumn colors.

For some reason, I always end up with more flowers in fall than I do in summer.

Oh, wait, I know why...

...it's because I'm  lazy.

I can just plop the mums into flower pots just as they are, rather than having to transplant them...and you get a lot more for your money than summer flowers. These mums were 3 for $10. Not bad, eh?

Don't you just love this one (below)? It's as big as some of my shrubs. I got it at Costco, and I think it was $10.99. I took this photo the day I bought it, before the buds were open. I thought it was going to be red.

A week later, it's starting to open. Uh, not red.

Oh well.

As soon as the caladiums bite the dust, which will be soon, I will move this giant mum into that pot.

I like to keep things basic...just mums and pumpkins. The jack-o-lantern above is the only fake one in the bunch, but it lights up, and looks good at night.

Once it gets closer to Halloween, I'll add my big, light-up pumpkin/black cat thingy. The kids like it when they come trick-or-treating. Can you believe we get about 250 kids on Halloween? It's so much fun.

But for now, it's just the basics.

I love my red door, and it makes a great backdrop to the mums and pumpkins.

When we first moved in, the door was hunter green, and I felt it made the house look sleepy. I was sitting on the soccer field one fall day and noticed this gorgeous red-leaf tree. It was an "Aha" moment -- I wanted my door to be that color.  Benjamin Moore's Heritage Red fit the bill.

Halfway through my photo shoot, I had this idea to grab the lantern from my back deck to see if it looked better on the front porch.

I'm not sure.  I think it might look a little too "pumpkin-y."

What do you think? I'll have to think about it.

    1. The mums are usually happy, Deb, but I have a habit of forgetting to water them. Then, they wish they were on someone else's porch!

  3. I love the color of your front door (I know I've told you that before) and I think it's a perfect match for all the pretty fall colors. That mum is HUGE and BEAUTIFUL! We don't have a Costco's near us :( And to answer your question... No, there are not too many pumpkins. They really set the mood for Halloween :)

    1. Thanks, Eileen. I am tempted to go to Costco and get another :) And thank you for the vote of keeping the lantern in the front! I look at the photos and like it; I look at it in real life, and I'm not so sure. Such an important decision ;)

    1. Thanks, Kim. Believe it or not, the nicest mums were at the supermarket. Every time I went, I just had to come home with some. Good thing they are done selling them now!

  5. Looks gorgeous, Amy! I love the little pumpkins in the lantern. We got our Mums 3/$10 too. Have I taken pictures? No. Have I painted my red front door yet since I have had the paint for 6 months? No. So... I am lazy too. lol You've inspired me but I still have to buy a piece of screen to keep the mosquitos out while painting. Love your Fall porch! Pinning. xo

    1. Well, Claire, I've got a list a mile long of things I didn't do because I was too busy taking photos of my porch! You know, things, like make dinner, do the laundry. No biggie, right? The family will understand, I hope:) Thanks for pinning!

    1. Hi Katie, I think today or tomorrow will be the last of the flip flop days. The weather is supposed to change by Wednesday. 37 degrees? Yikes, I'm not ready for that yet!

    1. Aren't those pumpkin planters great? They would be so easy to make, but I bought them over the last few years. Maybe I will make a few...Thanks for stopping by!

  13. Amy, a very pretty presentation of the season's vibrant colours and textures on your front porch. Love the colour of our door and your autumnal array of brilliance complements it perfectly! Flip flops are still flaunting all their summery flair here on the island, with temps reaching the mid 80s this week, too! I say, wear 'em till your tootsies start to feel just a tad numb! ;-D

    Happy Tuesday!

    2. Today is the day -- no more flip flops, went right to boots. It got very chilly here, and I think it is here to stay. My caladium has had it, so I think I'll be re-potting that big mum today!

  19. What a lovely porch! It’s so cozy and inviting. It also looks so much in tune with the autumn season with the orange flowers and pumpkin figures. Too bad you probably took it out during the winter. At least, there’s something to look forward to in the spring. Great job with the decorating!
