Although it was a beautiful, warm day
when we left New York City,
as soon as we hit the open sea,
it was too chilly to be outside.
We set off to familiarize ourselves with the interior of the ship.
Since we were on one of the largest cruise vessels in the world,
I thought it would take us a week
to get the lay of the land.
(Wait, does that expression 'hold water' when referring to a boat?)
Our cabin was a "Spa Suite" on the 14th deck.
You tell me if that looks like a suite!
It gets the "spa" designation because it had a fancy shower,
and I have to say, it may have been
the BEST shower we have ever used.
Go figure -- on a cruise ship, of all places!
Mr. Goo Shoes wants to look into getting one for home.
Yes, it was that good.

This central area was my favorite spot.
The stairs connected the three decks where everything happens...
The casino, theaters, comedy club, restaurants, and shopping
were all located on Decks 6, 7 and 8.
The Atrium is the central hub of the ship.
There was always something going on here...
Trivia games, dance lessons, movies...
I couldn't get a good photo of the entire space.
They were more intimate than the other massive dining room.
Yes, it's amazing what's considered "intimate" on a ship this size!
There were several "specialty" restaurants, as well,
but these had an additional cost,
ranging from $15 to $49 per person.
Then again, there was always the hot dog cart!
If it was up to Junior Goo Shoes,
we would have dined right here every night.
Two dogs to go, please!
A nice feature of the cruise ship was The Waterfront,
an outdoor promenade on Deck 8.
Many of the specialty restaurants
had outdoor seating on the Waterfront.
But...most nights, you'd freeze your fuzz off out there.
Note to self:
Next time we take a cruise from NY, go in summer!
After dinner, Mr. Goo Shoes and I spent a lot of
money time in the casino.
All of the outdoor action was on the upper decks.

(Look at that drop at the very top...oy vey).

(that's not JGS - he wouldn't let me up there when he was playing).

What is the plank?
Well, it's something to give mom a little
heart attack while she's on vacation.
I say "little" only because I didn't actually witness
Junior GS walking the plank three times.
It was only when he showed me this photo...
and a video that he took while he was on it...
that caused my hair to turn gray.
The plank is eight feet long,
and extends out over the ship from the 17th deck,
while the ship is moving, I might add.
Yes, there is a harness...
but I still get heart palpitations looking at this.
It looks like he's not too far from the water, right?

We finally had our sea legs,
but it was time for some excursions.

DeleteOh, it's time for another cruise. And we just went in late March!! I am a little jealous of the casino action but I laughed out loud when you talked about the shower. The shower on our our Disney cruises is hands down the best shower ever. My Husband wants one at home too!! lol Looking forward to the next installment! xo

That plank looked scary. There is no way I would try that! I thought your room looked like a decent size. I thought they were smaller.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get a duplicate comment, so all is well, Kelly!. The room was a decent size -- just a little narrow. There are smaller rooms, but because we were three, we had to get the so-called "suite." If you do decide to try a cruise, you may want to go on a short one, first, to see if you like it.

Yes, it was huge, but I actually felt that the public spaces felt smaller than I thought they would. It was like a little floating city! Hope you had a Happy Mother's Day, Catherine!

DeleteI had to laugh..Jr and I would get along...I'd love that hot dog cart too! :) The thing is about hot dogs is that one day they can be mustard and relish. Another day ketchup and sauerkraut. Another day chili dogs. AND...pls tell Jr that when I was just freshly moved out of my home for the first time living with a roommate and poor as church mice that they are EXCELLENT with Spanish Rice A Roni ! :) That was our main dish many a week :)

Deletewe did the breakaway when it first launched, in August. Even though you didn't have ideal weather, I'm sure you had fewer crowds and shorter lines for the slides, climbing wall, rope course, etc. which is an upside to cruising off-season. It's quite a ship!
ReplyDeleteWow that is quite a ship. We have done two NCL ships, but much smaller. I imagine my girls would love the water slides on the Breakaway, and the plank. We used to get suites when we first cruised and the girls napped during the day, but now they are teens and we get the inside cabins, as we really only sleep there. It saves us tons of money.
ReplyDeleteIt's not even my kid, and my heart rate is racing just looking at The Plank. Yikes! This looks like a ship that my family would enjoy. I can totally see my kids spending time on that crazy slide, the ropes course and the mini golf. It must have been cold because there aren't that many people in the pool. The restaurants look pretty, and I like the glass step staircase in the atrium. The best shower I've ever had was actually in New York City. I told my husband that it was a good thing we didn't have one because I would never get out, run up the water bill, and then just melt away.
