Are you a red velvet fan?
Moi? Absolument.
Cakes, donuts, cupcakes, pancakes, cookies,
I'm all in.
My infatuation with velvet isn't limited to baking.
I love to.......
Wrap my body in velvet.
Park my butt on velvet.
Slip my feet into velvet.
Cover my bed in velvet.
Rest my head on velvet.
I've got so much velvet in my house,
it's worthy of its very own post.
But today, I'm talking about velvet of the ingestible kind.
(As a weird aside, I just realized that EXACTLY two years ago to the day,
I wrote a post about red velvet donuts.
I hereby declare February 9 as National Red Velvet Day).
As a rule, I try not to post recipes that have been seen all over blog land,
but these cookies are SO good, I had to make an exception.
The recipe comes from the McCormick company,
the maker of the red food color, and vanilla extract, which is used in this recipe.
I've made their red velvet cake recipe many times, and,
having tried several others, it is hands down, the best I've had.

Based on my experience with the cake recipe,
I gave the cookies a chance.
Success!
Let's just say eating these cookies is the oral equivalent
of wrapping a luxurious velvet scarf around your neck.
A red velvet scarf, of course.
Just a note before you go and take out all of the ingredients from your pantry -
the cookie dough must chill in the refrigerator for four hours,
so be sure to factor that into your baking plan.
That gives you a chance to chill, too, while your cookie dough does the same.
You'll have enough time to watch National Velvet twice,
if I might make a suggestion.

So, here I am, on this cold and snowy day,
sitting on my brown velvet chair,
with my feet up on my animal print velvet ottoman,
wearing a purple velvet top,
and black velvet shoes,
eating red velvet cookies.
Life is Good.
Hi Amy, I think your love of velvet is so cute and I enjoyed reading this post. The cookies look delicious and they are going on my 'to bake' list. Have a Happy Valentine's Day.
ReplyDeleteYUM, truth be told my heart was singing and hopping reading this post GF. I can't wait to make these. Red Velvet cookies are a HUGE hit in this house and my family. The recipe I used last Christmas somehow vanished from my Pinterest board and the ones I made I didn't like.
ReplyDeleteThese will be my new recipe and made for next weekend for my brother and SIL.
Sorry such a long response. Thank you Queen of Velvet. I anoint you.
Cindy
I gladly accept that title, Cindy! All I need is a crown, and a long, red velvet robe! Hope you are warm and snug on this snowy day!
DeleteHi Amy,
ReplyDeleteI love red velvet and these cookies look soooooo good. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day and wonderful rest of the week.
Hugs,
Kris
Well, you know I'm the unofficial cookie monster (ok, auto correct just filled in 'mobster'. It must know I'm Italian). I love velvet too! Someday, I want a deep blue velvet sofa. But I digress. I bought some kind of red velvet stuff from King Arthur a few years ago but never used it. Wonder if it's still good or if I'll be carted away by some emt? I'll take my chances.

ReplyDeleteNot a huge fan of red velvet cake..it has no taste to me....but these cookies look so good, I would try one if there were a plate of them in front of me! The chocolate chips help me to want to make them...a lot!
ReplyDeleteAmy I too love anything velvet and with your recipe I will be in Red Velvet heaven! Thank you xoxo
ReplyDeleteOMGoodness! Just when I thought my sweet was somewhat curbed! I'll file it for when I'm ready to splurge or impress someone!

Amy I am baking the second pan of your cookies now. My my goodness they are to die for! I always make a Saturday Treat for my husband to take and share at work. They will be going with him in the morning, but not before I sneek one or two for myself. I thinking coffee and a cookie sounds wonderful. Recipe goes in my keep file. Thanks for sharing. Happy Valentine's Day. My five year old grandson is coming by shortly to have a few also.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you are enjoying them, Lynne! Thank you SO much for letting me know that you made them, and more importantly, liked them! I hope the folks your husband works with enjoy them, too. Have a great weekend!
Deleteyum! great idea. my mom always makes the chocolate crinkle cookies, but this red velvet is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteOh yum! They look great. Thanks for sharing at Home Sweet Home.
ReplyDeleteI love everything velvet as well, but have never had a velvet cake... or cookie yet!
ReplyDeleteThese look and sound delicious, Amy, but I have to confess that for a while now, I've stayed away from food colouring, unnecessary preservatives, anything that is made with a million ingredients, and anything I cannot pronounce!
