Spring Deck in Transition: "Be-faux" & After

Early Spring Deck: Faux plants help an early spring deck come to life. | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes

How early in the season do you start your outdoor "decorating?"

I usually wait until Memorial Day weekend to really "do it up" with summer flowers,
but actually, the best time of year to enjoy our deck is late spring, before it gets too hot.

After a super-early spring,
and then, an un-welcomed winter comeback a couple of weeks ago,
spring has returned, bringing with it, a string of glorious days!

This past weekend, we dragged out the chair cushions,
to enjoy the first afternoon of the season outdoors on the deck.
As beautiful as the day was, the deck felt a little naked...
okay, a lot naked.
The flower pots were empty; the trees limbs were bare.
The deck felt dull, empty, barren.

I had to restrain myself from running out to buy a lot of flowers
(I did give in to one pot of pansies),
since April's weather can be wacky.

Yet, the deck needed a little perking up,
so I decided to go a mostly faux route for this transitional phase
between now and late May.
After grabbing a bunch of things from inside the house,
the deck went from this...

to this...

Now I was playing with a full deck, so to speak
(although some may say that's debatable)!

The forsythia and most of the greenery is faux...

...except for the plants in my rustic box, which are real.

The faux plants and green plant stands came from the master bath.
You may recognize the animal print pillows from the guest room.

I spent a lazy afternoon reading magazines, thinking about gardening,
and doing a little backyard bird-watching.

It was a perfect evening to barbecue
Apparently, everyone in NJ must have thought the same thing,
since there was not a hamburger or hotdog roll to be found
in the first supermarket I went to.

Faux plants helped my early spring deck come to life.
I can't wait to decorate the deck "faux" real in May,
but in the interim, this is a good compromise!

Is your deck dressed for summer yet,
or is it still wearing its transitionals?

  2. Oh Amy I love your deck and all your touches of comfort and prettiness. Nope my deck isn't dressed for Summer ... Living in the city I have a stoop (steps) no deck but they are adorned with Boxwoods flanking the door and potted Purple Pansies. I loved your photos but now you've given me deck envy, lol.

Our weather still needs to warm up a little more, but it is improving ...

    All the best Jan

  5. Your deck looks AHMAZING..FAUX REAL ;).

But don't go trying to convince everyone those binoculars were for bird watching. Rumor has it you have a hunky neighbor...

  6. Amy, your deck looks very pretty with the animal-print pillows and faux/real plants. I love your comment about 'thinking about gardening'. I a lot of 'thinking' about gardening too, but unfortunately that's as far as I get with it.

  7. I had to chuckle, my front porch has faux forsythia, a cluster of small (artificials) topiaries stuck in a rustic bucket, and a flat of pansies waiting to find a home. Same thing naked, unspring yet. Forsythias just are beginning to pop out and finally the daffodils opened. Our Chicagoland weather has really slowed everything down this year. Your deck looks cheery and inviting (as does mine, lol) When I get the pansies planted, I will post.

    Thanks for the share...Sandi@BarberryLane

  8. Your "transitional" deck décor looks wonderful! Those faux touches along with the pretty pillows and accessories really spruced up the space. Great job! Although we've had a really warm spring here too, I'm hesitant to set things up too early but am hoping to put a few things out next weekend.

  9. You've shamed me into thinking about the deck - decorating is more than putting the cushions on the chairs and (in Greece) chasing stray cats off of them! Will need to go shopping I can tell! Although the 'faux' that I've found here has been in the form of flower blooms which are used at cemeteries so not quite the visual image you've created. Rest in peace on the deck. . .well, I guess it might work!

  10. What a great idea till Spring decides to stick around! No outdoor living for us yet. Every year we wait till the last minute to put furniture on the front porch because the floor needs painting. Then, when the weather does not cooperate, we give in and put it all out, without painting the floor!

  11. WOW it looks gorgeous ! Same back and forth weather here ...LOL what I was doing the other day was sewing a hole in a cushion where the squirrel had opened it up to take some stuffing out for his nest over the winter I suppose! Mental note : early winter next year just plop some stuffing from the craft store on the porch in a basket for the squirrels and save the cushions! :)

  12. Your back deck area is so pretty! I love the furniture you have out there. It looks so inviting. I haven't yet fixed up mine because of the pollen. I do have some ferns on my front porch though. I have plans to buy some nice furniture for my back deck this season though. So, hopefully, I will be able to enjoy ours in the morning and at night. It's too hot during the day though. (Insert sad face).

  20. We live in West Texas where the wind blows HARD all spring..I have tried to make a tiny backyard spot but every day, I have to go out and get the pillows, rug, plants....and bring them inside. Hopefully, we'll have a calm summer. Last year, one of the little tables and umbrella ended up in the pool ....
Your deck is lovely. Here from Cozy
