I mean, NO ONE complains when you say
"I need to stop in the Ladies Room...again."
They say, "Me, too!"
And no one complains when you say
"Can we stop in this store?"
They say, with enthusiasm,
"Of course! Let's stop in every store!"
No one complains when you take an enormous suitcase,
with enough clothes for a cruise around the world.
They say, "I brought five coats and 14 pairs of shoes!"
And no one will roll their eyes when you say,
And no one will roll their eyes when you say,
"Should I buy this? I don't really need it."
They will say,
"Who says you have to need it?
And that's the way it was,
on a recent girls' weekend in Boston
on a recent girls' weekend in Boston
with two sets of sisters,
who happen to be cousins.
who happen to be cousins.
It was a laugh-till-you-can't-breath,
pee-in-your-pants kind of weekend.
Boston may never be the same.
I hadn't been to Boston in years...
in fact, it was so long ago that it felt like my first time.
The four of us drove up on a Friday morning,
the first weekend in April,
the first weekend in April,
for another cousin's wedding.
We stayed at the Millenium Hotel in downtown Boston...
which has been a marketplace and meeting hall since 1742,
Now, it's a hugely popular tourist destination,
with lots of souvenir shops and fast food.
I wonder what Paul Revere would think --
"The Starbucks are coming?"
I wonder what Paul Revere would think --
"The Starbucks are coming?"
Since there were no men with us
who needed to nap as soon as we got to the hotel,
we dropped our bags and hit the town.
There's a good reason it's been an institution since 1926...
We ordered way more than was humanly possible to consume...
three different "individual" pizzas, which were huge...
and then we finished it all, LOL.
We left with full stomachs and killer garlic breath,
in search of Boston's best cannoli.
We stopped several people to ask which bakery had the best,
and everyone said "The Modern."
So, of course, we went to...
Why?
I don't know why.
Maybe we're used to NY-style cannoli,
I don't know why.
Maybe we're used to NY-style cannoli,
but we did not love them.
Shoulda gone to The Modern.
Shoulda gone to The Modern.
I was in Boston for all of two hours,
and had already gained five pounds.
I always get a lump in my throat
when I see people from all walks of life
paying tribute to the six million Jews
who were murdered by the Nazis.
The marketplace at Faneuil Hall
was our final destination of the afternoon.
We looked, but we didn't touch.
and then,
we met a bunch of our other cousins for dinner at Anthem,
right in the Faneuil Hall square.
I went for the cholesterol special --
New England clam "chowdah"
I'm not sure I ever laughed as hard as I did that night,
but let's just say that the waitress actually pulled up a chair
because we were having that much fun.
because we were having that much fun.
I've got funny cousins, yes I do.
Next day, we were up and out early,
and headed to Newbury Street
for some breakfast and shopping.
for some breakfast and shopping.
We kept asking for directions to The Paramount -
a restaurant that was supposed to have a great breakfast.
a restaurant that was supposed to have a great breakfast.
which had us walking completely around
Boston Commons.
No worries...
When we finally did find the Paramount,
there was an hour wait to get in.
On our walk, we stumbled upon the "Cheers" bar...
Fortified with omelettes and coffee,
we walked over to Newbury Street,
where we went into almost every store...
and every Ladies' room, too.
Later that night, was the reason
we came to Boston in the first place...
we came to Boston in the first place...
The Wedding!
Four showers, one taxi, an elevator ride,
and thirty-three floors later...
Four showers, one taxi, an elevator ride,
and thirty-three floors later...
As was the Bride...
What an entrance!
Could you walk down those stairs in a long gown and heels?
Me?
I would have had a reverse-Jennifer Lawrence moment...
giving "Here Comes The Bride" new meaning.
"Look out belooooow!"
She nailed it, though.
"I do."
They did.
Mazel Tov!
I don't have to tell you
that we had the most fun table, do I?
that we had the most fun table, do I?
After a farewell brunch on Sunday,
the girls' weekend was over,
and we headed out of Bean Town...
and we headed out of Bean Town...
Yes, we may have left Boston
weighing a few more pounds
than we did when we arrived...
but on the "Good Times" scale of 1-10,
our weekend was a...
10...
11...
I think we broke the scale.

Aw, just seeing all of these pics. Too much fun! Hubs landed in Boston earlier today (of course, he's from there). I sure wish I could be there with him but we're all going up together again soon when the boys are out of school. Love Boston and now I need some chow-dahhh!. And some Regina's. AND some Italian pastries too!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a super fun trip and your "did we think about the men" image.... LOL!!
(On a side note, it was 48* when he landed at 3P EST and it was 91* here in FL. Yikes!)
Glad you will get your Boston 'fix" later this summer, Claire! We did have a great great time. It was freezing when we went - windy and cold, enough for winter coats in early April!
DeleteSounds like so much fun - Boston is a great city for walking and eating :-)
ReplyDeleteI feel like we saw just a tiny bit of it, Vicki, so I need to go back! I can't believe that it's only a 3-hour drive, and this is the first time we've driven up there!
DeleteIt has been a while since I visited Boston. Such a great city and with a group of girlfriends, even better!
ReplyDeleteI need to go back and explore some more, Michelle! We didn't see enough, and it at a 3-hour drive, it's very doable to go up for another weekend!
DeleteJust the girls how fun! Your pictures are beautiful. Hilarious that no one got to the hotel and have a nap first thing! I really enjoy your blog...thanks for the visit to Boston!! I'll get out of California one day!
ReplyDeleteThank you, June! We did have fun. Boston is a really nice city - much more compact than NY.
DeleteSounds like tons of fun! I'm so glad you got to do this.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Me, too, Brenda. It's been a really long time since I've gone away with 'the girls." Nothing like it!
DeleteCute post and sounds like the perfect girls weekend! Looks cold there and no leaves on the trees yet. We are in full summer mode here.
ReplyDeleteIt was SO cold, Kim! First weekend in April, and we were in our winter coats! Of course it warmed up the day we were leaving!
DeleteNever been to Boston....your pictures and your fun make me want to. So funny all your comments about being with woman as opposed to men on a trip....so true!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a fun city, AnnMarie. I wish we had more time to see other areas, but I guess I'll just have to go back!
DeleteI loved this post, Amy! Such a great tour of Boston, I would love to visit there some day. I kinda was there a few years ago--on a business trip, but did not do any touristy stuff (such a shame). Thanks for taking time to take all the pictures. And the food....to die for.
ReplyDeleteI, too, had been to Boston on several business trips, so never really got to see it. And I was there years ago when I was in college, so I don't remember anything! The food was amazing!
DeleteFantastic tour Amy, I was tagging along and enjoying the company immensely. I remember Cheers and it was like seeing an old friend when I saw the sign! The food looked so delicious, I would be in a big heap of trouble if I was there as my eyes would be bigger than my belly!! Thanks so much for taking us along! xx p.s. congratulations to your cousin on her special day xx
ReplyDeleteYou have no idea how much we ate, Chel! It was crazy! Of course, I enjoyed every bite :) It was so cool to see the Cheers bar. I loved that show!
DeleteThanks for sharing. This sure did sound like a fun time.
ReplyDeleteIt was a weekend to remember, Phyllis!
DeleteMade me laugh out loud! Have to plan another trip!!
ReplyDeleteWell, looks who's here -- finally! Glad I made you LOL!
DeleteLoved your recap of our trip!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reliving it for us!
Thanks, Lynn! I left the photo booth story out, because without the picture, it wouldn't be as funny!
DeleteHi Amy,
ReplyDeleteI've missed your very funny narratives about all those amazing and adventurous trips you take and this one is no exception! Of course I was LOL at one of your keenest observations about men needing to take a nap upon arrival in a new city, (whether it's an hour plane ride or a 10 hour drive!), meanwhile, we can't wait to hit the town!
Thanks for the pretty pics,
and history fix,
which foods to pick and which to skip,
(most crucial: that acute cannoli tip),
of your 'no boys allowed' 'Bah-ston' trip!!
Poppy
Thanks, Poppy! I've missed you, too! Love your poem :)
DeleteCold perhaps but very fun no less! Great pics Amy. Thanks for sharing your girls weekend with us. Looks absolutely awesome. I want to go to Boston, that is one city on my bucket list. Been to NY and Chicago, next stop Boston:) Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt was SO cold - First weekend in April and we were wearing winter coats! When you do get to Boston, head right to Regina's pizza!
DeleteWow! You really covered a lot of ground Amy! I've never been to Boston and definitely this is one of the places I really want to visit someday soon! Thanks for all the tips! Glad you had a blast!
ReplyDeleteIt's a very compact city, Vel, unlike NY. So in two days, we were able to see more than I thought we would.. Still so much more to see! Thanks for your visit!
DeleteYou had the most beautiful, funniest crasiest weekend ,LOL. Of course there is not much better than going out with the girls ; I love your photo's and what a beautiful city Boston is. And there was a beautiful bride too.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend
It was so much fun, Riet! I really enjoyed Boston, and would like to go back to see more. The beautiful bride was the "icing on the wedding cake!"
DeleteYou have really captured Boston's beauty with these pictures. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. I was laughing at your opening lines. How true is all that stuff, the girls only understand, LOL. The food just made me hungry.
ReplyDeleteCynthia
It is true, isn't it, Cynthia, about the differences is travel with men and women! I get hungry every time I look at these pics!
DeleteI've never been to Boston, but it's on my list! What a fun weekend. The bride was beautiful - I could have NEVER done those stairs - impressive. Loved all your pictures.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely worth a visit, Lana. It's nice and compact, so it doesn't require a lot of days; however, there is so much to see that if you had the time, you'd definitely fill the time.
DeleteIt seemed like the best weekend! I loved seeing Boston through your eyes... I feel like I won't be hungry for a while, now!
ReplyDeleteI felt like I couldn't eat for days afterwards, Magali!
DeleteWhat a fun post. I started craving pizza immediately even though it is only a little after 6 a.m. Sure I could have pizza for breakfast, why not? :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tour.
And the ending...thinking about the men back home...LOL!
I like the way you think, Deb...yes, pizza for breakfast is a fine idea!
DeleteSoooooo much fun...I even enjoyed every minute!!! Glad you had this much fun and shared it...and I did watch Cheers!
ReplyDeleteBlessings dear. Catherine
Glad you had a good time, too, Catherine! Cheers was such a great show, wasn't it? It was really cool to see the actual bar.
Delete4 Jewish girls on the loose? Vey iz mir lol - I can't imagine the fun !!! ( or the humor )
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like an amazing time - and laughing like that burns calories don't you know !!!
xox
Ooh, I love your Yiddish, Suzan! Well, I should be emaciated by now, after all the laughing we did!
DeleteOn the way to Boston this Sunday for 10 days. What is a must see and where is a must eat for the best money? 3 meals a day and hotle are killing my budget and would like to spend some money on fun. We will have time to do what we want waiting for granddaughter to do classes at Harvard. Please email me directly. tljwlj2@suddenlink.net I need to know what not to miss. TIA
ReplyDeleteWow, what a fun weekend! Looks like you ate really well too! It has been years since I visited Boston, but I loved the old world feel of the city.
