Some of the photos in this post were taken by my son,
a.k.a. Junior Goo Shoes. I've been to Savannah about ten times.
You'd think that would qualify me to be an official tour guide,
but.......nope.
We always stay in the same general area,
so my knowledge is limited
to where my own two feet have taken me.
Except for our first time in Savannah ,
my relationship with this genteel city
has been a series of one-night stands.......
just quick stop-overs on our way to Florida.
One place I always like to visit is the Historic Riverfront,
also known as River Street.
The first time I went looking for it,
I'm embarrassed to say........I couldn't find the river!
I mean, it's not like I was looking for
a contact lens on the beach........
I'm talking about a major body of water, as in
Take Me To The.......Cry Me A.......Man From Snowy.......
Ol' Man.......Up The Lazy....... Moon....... Down By The.......
RIVER!
Google maps showed that it was just beyond Emmet Park,
right where I was standing, but.......

AHA! There was the river down below........
but how on earth did one get there???
I finally figured out how to get "downstairs,"
and found myself in a cobblestone courtyard.
Then, I descended another flight of steps
hidden between two buildings
(sheesh, they don't make it obvious).......
But, at last -- sea level!
River Street was the main location for goods
coming into the city in the early 1700's.
In the 1970's, abandoned warehouses were transformedinto shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, inns and hotels.
Now, this area is a top destination for tourists.
There is a lot more to do at the riverfront
than first meets the eye.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started,
depending on how much time you have.
1. STROLL
Walk along the promenade, and admire the historic buildings,
many of which are restored cotton warehouses.
You may encounter street performers,
horse-drawn carriages,
or a parade of boats and barges in this very active harbor.
Just be mindful of the trolleys! Take note of the cobblestone streets.........
.......and the views across the river.
2. EAT
There are restaurants, bars, bakeries.......
.......and the not-to-be-missed Savannah Candy Kitchen.
where you can watch them making pralines
(and, yes, there are free samples 😋).
3. SHOP
Speaking of sweet things,
be sure to check out the Savannah Bee Company.
be sure to check out the Savannah Bee Company.
I haven't been to this location,
but I always stop in at the one on Broughton Street.
Here you will find everything honey.

The whipped cinnamon honey is one of the best things
I've ever Ever EVER eaten.
I am addicted to the Rosemary Lavender Beeswax hand cream,
and the Lemongrass Spearmint liquid soap.
Another fun place to browse is River Street Market Landing,
an open-air market where crafts people sell their wares.
You'll find jewelry, art, clothing, and specialty foods.
Stop into River Street Liquors for some spirits.
It bills itself as "the smallest liquor store in the world."

4. TOUR
Take a cruise on the Savannah River Boat.
They sail several times a day,
and I imagine a sunset cruise would be spectacular.
Or, hop on a water taxi or ferry boat for a different perspective of this waterfront locale.
If you're a land-lubber, take a trolley tour.

5. STAY
The Olde Harbor Inn is a boutique hotel
with unique vintage architectural details.
Originally built in 1892 as a warehouse,
it now offers all-suites accommodations,
and it's pet-friendly, too!
Another option is the River Street Inn
which has bragging rights
as being the oldest hotel on River Street.
It's a restored 200-year-old cotton warehouse overlooking the river.
UPDATE: This hotel is NOT pet-friendly.
Have you been to Savannah?
Have you/would you visit the river front?
(And will you bring me some pralines)?
Till next time,

I have never visited Savannah and have no plans to do so, so I'm afraid I won't bring you pralines, Amy. It does, however, have the air of a city with much to offer. As for making my way down to the river, I would certainly do that and I have little doubt that a stroll along its banks would be very pleasant. Having said all of this, I am not in general drawn to cities at all and my happy times are spent far more in woods and meadows. Bet I could find a Barn Owl in one of the parks though!
ReplyDeleteSavannah's historic riverfront looks like a nice place to visit. I've never been to Savannah but I'd love to visit there sometime. Thanks, I enjoyed looking at the awesome photos you both took of Savannah and learned about it.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh thanks for the tour. I love the south so much with all the history. I visited Savannah once for the day when we took a trip to Augusta Florida. I wish I had more time to explore you get such a great vibe walking those streets. I hope to plan a trip to Savannah again soon. xoxo

ReplyDeleteJunior Goos Shoes got some great pictures! We have been to Savannah, and actually stayed in the Olde Harbor Inn. River Street was fun. We shopped, strolled amd took a trolley ride. We had a great guide, full of knowledge and sass!
ReplyDeleteAmy, this is a great post with loads of wonderful info. Savannah is a place I've never visited and would love to. A friend moved there (well, sort of a forced move by her children) and really has never been able to explore the city because of her physical issues. Rick and I have talked about someday (post Covid, if it ever is) visiting. She has few friends in her new city and it would be fun for all of us. I'm going to remember your post when we do.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to go to Savannah and after reading this post, I want to go even worse. I'm glad that you found two dog friendly hotels so that Sherman can go as well.
ReplyDeleteLooks lovely Amy. I have never been. Historical place to visit some day. The riverfront must be so nice to walk. I bet the food is awesome. Thanks for sharing Amy.
