only to realize it's been in your house all along?
I've been looking for a table for my guest room,
I really didn't want to spend a lot of money,
and thought the challenge of the hunt would be fun!
Yeah, well, that got old after a few years.
Every time I walked into Home Goods, I thought it would be my lucky day.
Nope.
One time, they had a giant Eifel Tower, another time,
an enormous London phone booth, but no suitable table.

If I was a DIY'er, I would have picked up something fabulous at a yard sale,
and refinished it to look like a million bucks.
and refinished it to look like a million bucks.
But, I'm not that girl.
And then, out of nowhere...a light bulb moment!
I had a very simple parsons table that I had taken from my dad's apartment,
but I never found the right spot for it.
I'd stuck it in another room,
and it took almost two years for it to hit me
that it would be great on that wall in the guest room.
I dragged it in...my decorating wheels were spinning.
Two leather folding benches I recently found at Home Goods
were in front of the bed in the guest room...
...but, hmmm...they'd look much better parked under the table.
And then...And THEN...
I remembered I had taken a mirror from my father's apartment,
that would work over the table.
Oh, boy, this was getting fun!
Four years of decorating inertia, and now I was moving at warp speed!
The tray is a souvenir from Amsterdam.
The two bottles and the Apothecary jar are from Home Goods.
Did you think the tall bottle was wine?
Nah, it's bubble bath.
The small bottle with the flowers is Bath Essence,
whatever that means.
I filled the apothecary jar with bath salts.
They smell heavenly - lavender!
I love when hotels have a makeup mirrors,
and wanted my guests to have one.
The candle was a prize I won at a bridal shower recently,
playing "Bridal Bingo."
Bingo is my game - do you remember when I won
the BIG Bingo on the cruise ship last year?
I think this little spot in the guest room turned out pretty nice.
It's a lot better than it was, that's for sure.
The room is about two-thirds done.
Here's a peek...
The rest of the updating involves repainting a dresser and two night tables.
I've never done that before, and I'm terrified I'll ruin them,
so it may be another four years before I work up the nerve to give that a try!
Do you have something old that became new again?

The transformation is incredible!! And I love when you can repurpose something you already own and give it a new and better look!
ReplyDeleteThat turned out beautiful! I'll go ahead now and place my reservation to stay there this summer. You can show me around NYC too. It will be fun. I love the feminine touch of the purple orchid with the gold tray and bath essentials. The leather seating underneath is a great way to fill the void under the table too.
ReplyDeleteWhen can I come over and be your guest? It looks so fantastic!

ReplyDeleteRe: question you left in my blog
I used to live as an expat in China for many years. But before that, I was born & raised in the Philippines. Sorry for the late reply.
This is an impressive makeover, magazine worthy! It looks professional and to think that you did it all from shopping the house!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the after!!!

ReplyDeletePaint them! It's easier than you think ;)
ReplyDeleteI love the new look! It's really elegant.
This is my FAVORITE kind of decorating Amy...Interior Redesign! Using items you already have in your home to create a new look for a room or a pretty vignette. Your new dressing table is just lovely. Your guest will feel so pampered!
