SCENES FROM FLORIDA PART 1: GULLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN

I've been a bad gull.

It's been almost a month since my last post.
Forgive me, readers, I feel chagrined,
as I've been struggling with whether or not to continue blogging.
But that's a story for another time.


Today, I'm talking about sea gulls........

Not Golden Gulls.
Not Gilmore Gulls.
Not The Gull With The Dragon Tattoo.
Not Two Broke Gulls.
Not Rich Gulls, Uptown Gulls, Surfer Gulls, Material Gulls, or American Gulls.

Nope.......
Just some gulls I met in Florida recently.

CONVERSATIONS WITH THE CARDINAL

 Is there someone in your circle that everyone wants to talk to,

be it for advice, 
to debate important matters, 

or simply just to pass the time with idle conversation?

Over the last three years, 

I've noticed that there are many who flock from far and wide 

to my backyard, to speak with The Cardinal.

Engaging in a bit of espionage, 

I've been secretly recording conversations and encounters with The Cardinal.

No sources -- just good, old-fashioned first-hand investigative reporting.

I can verify beyond a shadow of a doubt,

that all of these tête-à-têtes, did in fact, take place. 

Here are just some of the meetings I've witnessed.

  "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. Aren't you?"

 

 "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse."

 "May the force be with you." 

 

"Love means never having to say you're sorry."

"I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

"You talkin' to me?"

"I am your father."

 "What'choo talkin' about, Willis?"

"I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. 
I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it."

 "Let's hug it out, bitch." 

 "You know how to whistle, Steve, don't you? You just put your lips together and blow." 

"I'll be back."

 "You is kind. You is smart. You is important." 

"Ruh-Roh."

  "I want to be alone."

"What we've got here is a failure to communicate."

"I see dead people."

"Houston, we have a problem."

 "You look mah-velous!"

 "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

 "I'm the king of the world!"
 
 

 "We'll always have Paris."

"Here's lookin' at you, kid."

7 Reasons To Be a Backyard Bird-Watcher

Are you one of the 60ish million people in the US 

who are obsessed with bird-watching?

I never really paid attention to what was flying around when I was a kid,

but thanks to a neighbor who told me that blue jays 

were the meanest birds in town, I was terrified of them for years.

(The same neighbor also scarred me for life about squirrels, thank you very much).

When I lived in New York City, pigeons were the only birds I saw. 

They didn't thrill me, as they they thought nothing of flying way too close to my head,

nor, did they feel the need to move out of the way when I walked down the street.

And, yes, I got pooped on more than once.

Yeah, yeah, it's good luck, I know, but it's no fun 
showing up at the office with a big splat of bird doo in your hair.  

Trust me, no one wants to go to lunch with you. 

 

So, it's kind of amazing that I actually ever became infatuated with birds. 

Now, I can't imagine living anywhere that I couldn't hang up at least one bird feeder.

I can spend the entire day watching birds flit around the backyard

(Did I just hear multiple "clicks" of people un-friending me 

because they think that's weird?)

Now, I know that there are plenty of you out there 

who are equally obsessed with bird-watching, 

but for those of you who don't get what all the fuss is about,

Six Tips for Attracting Hummingbirds

How's your summer going -- crossing a lot of things off your "Summer To-Do" list?

Me? I've been really lazy this summer...
doing only what I want to do, or absolutely have to do, 
and you know what? 
It feels really good!

One of the things on my summer "Want To Do" list 
was trying to attract hummingbirds to my backyard.
Last summer, I was not successful because I made a few mistakes, 
and I was determined to do better this year.
I succeeded!

I am so enamored with these tiny birds, 
that I spend a ridiculous amount of time on the deck, 
often in my bathrobe, 
photographing them like crazy. 
This has not been good for my reputation around the neighborhood,
but the hummingbirds hold me in high esteem.
