Chilled Watermelon Soup...and Paul McCartney!

Chilled Watermelon Soup: So refreshing and super-easy! Make it in a blender in minutes! | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes

Hi, Hi, Hi!

Who was your favorite Beatle?

In order to answer that question, you've got to admit to being "of a certain age."

So, yeah, I am.

My favorite Beatle was Paul.
None of the others even came close, in my youthful opinion.
Those eyes....
His smile....That Voice....sigh.
I spent hours in my room staring at his photos, listening to Beatles records
writing fan letters, and dreaming of meeting him some day.
"Oh Paul, I Wanna Hold Your Hand!"
I'd have given anything if only he would Love Me, Do!

I even wore a giant pin that said, "I Love Paul,"
and recently, I turned the house upside down to see if I still had it, because.......

Many, Many, MANY years later,
I was about to go to my first Paul McCartney concert!

And so it happened, on a Beautiful Night,
the Goo Shoes family headed out to Met Life Stadium in NJ
to witness this rock and roll legend in person.

It was Jr. GS's first real concert, and he loved it!
He's a fan of Paul McCartney's music......
It surprises me -- and yet it doesn't -- that this music transcends generations.
Jr. GS' assessment of "Not bad for an old guy," hurt just a wee bit.

Even though we had decent seats, we could barely see Paul on stage without the giant screens!

When I was a young girl
I begged my parents to let me go to a Beatles concert, but they wouldn't.
Now, seeing him as an adult all these years later,
I was practically screaming like a teenager when Paul sang
A Hard Day's Night, Can't Buy Me Love, We Can Work It Out
and several other early Beatle tunes.
This year's One On One tour was the first time
he has performed those old songs in his solo concerts.
I'm so glad I waited!

And when Paul sang Let It Be, followed by Hey, Jude,
I actually thought I'd burst into tears.
I don't know, but there's something about
thousands of people singing in unison that gets me all blubbery.
Cell phone flashlights lit up the stadium......
not quite as fabulous as the cigarette lighters of Yesterday, but effective, nonetheless.

Live And Let Die, complete with a fireworks display, was definitely a highlight,
while the most fun number was O-bla-di O-bla-da -- the crowd went wild!
Jr. GS was just the slightest bit embarassed by my dancing and singing.
"Do I know you?" he asked,
when I stopped bopping just long enough to tell him how we used to blast this song
in my friend's basement when I was his age.

O-Bla-Di O-Bla-Da!

The concert was outstanding -- 32 songs followed by a six-song encore......
and more fireworks!
All I know is that When I'm Sixty Four
I hope I've got the energy that Paul has at 74 years old
He's still GOT it!

Yes, I finally fulfilled a bucket list dream, but
With A Little Luck, I hope I'll have chance to see him again!

So, what does all of this Paul McCartney stuff have to do with chilled watermelon soup?
Absolute NOTHING, other than Maybe I'm Amazed at how delicious it is!
It sure has been a Long And Winding Road to get to the recipe!

Can I tell you Something?
This has to be one of the easiest recipes ever.
Throw a few ingredients into a blender, and in just a couple of minutes,
 it will all Come Together.
Then, just Let It Be in the fridge for 2-4 hours, so all of the flavors meld.

On a hot summer day, chilled watermelon soup
is an unexpected treat when served in individual mini-portions
 alongside other hors d' oeuvres.
I did exactly that when the Brooklyn gang came over a couple of weeks ago.
What did everyone Say, Say, Say about it?
They said it was delicious!

Pack it up in a container, and you can take it Here, There and Everywhere.

How good is this chilled watermelon soup?
It's so good, I can eat it Eight Days a Week!

The End.

  1. Loved them all but I think Paul was more mainstream with his music after the Beatles broke up.

I've been looking for a recipe like this--thank you! Sounds so refreshing!

  2. Just by chance, I noticed your blog on Penny's sidebar---the Toody Goo Shoes captured my eye, for that's one of the lines in one of my GrandDaughter's favorite book: MAIDA'S LITTLE SHOP. A little boy is in the shop to buy ten books for a dime, and he calls out the titles in the most hilarious flow of words, like SWEEPING BEAUTY and JACK THE JOINT COOLER, and when we get to Toody Goo Shooes, we're rolling aginst each other with mirth.

We've learned not to read that one at bedtime, for it gets us both in stitches and wide awake.

Lovely recipe today, and wonderful story of seeing Paul. Earlier than a Beatles fan, I am, but i did get to see Elvis three times, and I'm in one of the pictures.

  4. What an incredible experience. For me, it was The Monkees. Seattle. August 25, 1967. To this day my girlfriend and I treat that day as though it were a holiday and send each other greetings -- just to keep the memory of that magic day alive. Keep reaching those goals ~ and have a great weekend!

  5. I was a big fan too when I was a teenager. I had all the albums. Yep that shows our age right there saying you owned the albums lol! Glad you got to go to the concert to hear Paul sing. So jealous. The watermelon soup looks yummo. Have a great rest of the week.

  6. I loved this post. Ringo was my favorite because he always seemed like the underdog of the group.

I love this line from Sliding Doors - James: Everybody's born knowing all the Beatles lyrics instinctively. They're passed into the fetus subconsciously along with all the amniotic stuff. Fact, they should be called "The Fetals".

Our kids grew up with Sunday morning "Breakfast With the Beatles" on one of our local radio stations.

When I turned 64, I told my Leadership class that it was my Beatle's Birthday. I had that class after lunch and somehow they lured me out of my classroom right at the end of lunch. When I got back to the classroom, they had decorated the classroom and "When I'm Sixty-Four" was playing as I entered the room.

  7. Very cool way of writing about the watermelon soup, Amy! I really must send a link to my TN sister of this post as she is such a Paul fan, total Beatles fan. She and her husband went to hear him when he performed in Nashville. After seeing your pictures I would love to see it too!

I was a young married in our first home, an apartment in an attic of two sweet old people in a big house and remember dancing and singing around in it one Saturday morning when I Want to Hold Your Hand played on the radio. Elvis had been my guy but watching these English Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show made me feel like a teenager again.

Praise galore for a terrific post, Amy. Hey Jude gets to me too!

  8. Fun post and as always very clever using the songs in your context. I was surprised that I know all of them! I was a Beatle fan but not crazy, crazy so I didn't have a favorite. We just heard a lot of the Beatles songs again at an outdoor concert where a local band called Mr. Mustard sang for an hour. They did a great impression and their tag line is The Beatles. Period.

  9. You crack me up Amy! Love how you used the song titles in your post :).

I went to ALL the Beatles' concerts at Shea Stadium, but don't worry. You didn't miss much. Everyone was screaming so loud no one could hear them singing lol.

Seriously, it was fun, and I was glad I was able to go. I think I was maybe 12 or 13...maybe 14. I went with my sister who was 2 years older and a couple of friends.

I happen to be thirsty right now, so your watermelon soup sounds great. Bring some over, por favor?

  10. What a great post Amy ... I've always liked the Beatles.
Lennon and McCartney wrote some brilliant songs which live on and as you say it is music that transcends generations.
    What a fantastic concert!

Have to say your watermelon soup looks and sounds delicious

    All the best Jan

  12. I've never been a hard core Beatles fan probably because they're a bit older than me and I wasn't really raised listening to them. My sister probably was though. She's 9 yrs older than me. I do like their songs though. You would have to be living under a rock to not know who they are too! Glad that you got to go to their concert! That watermelon soup is probably very refreshing for the summer. I've never heard of it before.

  13. YES, Paul. I am of a certain age and remember junior high school dances with Beatles music. Ahhhh. The slow dances were the best. ha ha.

  15. Have loved the Beatles since I was about twelve, but my favourite was John, for his depth, deeper voice, and witty wisdom, but I can understand the allure of Paul. Never actually got a chance to see them, although I did manage to see a tribute band, which was pretty good. Your song titles brought back many sweet memories of my teen years!

Your watermelon soup looks and sounds very appetizing, and I'm sure would make the perfect meal on these hot and humid days we've been having of late!

  19. Quite jealous . . . But thanks for taking me back to my teenage years. Although I'll admit after reading this I did go put on some Beetles music and danced around my house. I love that recipe, it's one a our favorite summer go to's.

  20. Ingredients page calls for 1/4 cup of ground ginger, but on directions page it says 1/4 teaspoon.
My son was making this and put the amount in from the ingredients page.
    RUINED IT
So not happy that this recipe was written incorrectly and all that work to throw it out.
