What's your go-to beverage?
And don't say vodka.
I'm talking about what you drink
most often...everyday.
OK, maybe it is vodka.
I'm not judging.
Most times, I reach for a glass of water,
or unsweetened iced tea as a runner-up.
It wasn't always this way.
When I was a kid,
my favorite beverage was strawberry soda.
It's not that I don't like soda now...
I just don't let myself drink it.
I'd rather use my calories on cheese,
or cake, or ice cream.
Or cheese.
Did I say cheese?
I've got to admit, though,
I do, at times, get a little bored with water.
Water with lemon,
Water with lime,
Water with ice...
YAWN.
Sometimes, it's as dull as dishwater.
Once summer comes,
things get a little more exciting.
I like adding some fruit to my water,
and letting it steep.
It's really refreshing...
kind of like an adult version of strawberry soda,
minus the sugar and the fizz.
And the calories.
Not really, it's nothing like strawberry soda,
but it is tasty.
When I made a pitcher of strawberry mint water recently,
Junior Goo Shoes made a face
and said,
"Who puts leaves and strawberries in water?
That's gross."
I couldn't get him to try it.
Two days later, after it was long gone,
he said,
"Can I have some of that strawberry water?"
Sheesh.
I can't figure that kid out sometimes.
I guess it just had to steep in his brain
for a few days.
Fruit-flavored waters are great to serve
when you are having company.
It makes a good impression,
like nice, clean towels in the bathroom.
Yes, you may have under-cooked the chicken,
and over-cooked the vegetables,
but your guests will think you are a very posh hostess
once they catch sight of your elegantly infused water.
No matter that all you did
was toss a bunch of fruit into a pitcher.
The chicken will be long forgotten,
but the water will be memorable.
Just think of it as a pretty accessory
to the rest of your meal.
If you try it,
make the fruit water at least an hour beforehand --
preferably two,
so that the flavors are infused in the water.
Be sure to mottle the mint
(you know, crush it, bruise it, until it yells "ouch!"),
to release the flavor.
Just don't make it the day before,
or the fruit will get waterlogged...
and will look like bloated goldfish that went belly up.
Not pretty.
I'm sorry.
That probably ruined your appetite, didn't it?
So, have I convinced you to put strawberry mint water
on the menu of your next soiree?
(I apologize about the goldfish visual,
really, I do).

I must have missed it an dinner yesterday! I had plan old Poland Spring! Maybe next time!!
ReplyDeleteYou're on - next time, for sure!
DeleteI drink lots if spearmint iced tea in the summer because it grows right outside my door. And is delicious and refreshing. I do think I'll add some strawberries. Your photos are just amazingly rich and beautiful!
ReplyDeleteNow that sounds delicious, Cynthia! I'm hoping to have a bigger herb garden this summer -- going to add that to my list. I love spearmint.
DeleteThat sounds like a wonderful idea. I drink only water, herbal tea or decaf coffee (and maybe, a little wine - not vodka, though!!) these days, so this will be perfect for me. Thank you for sharing - it looks beautiful, too!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Diane! It's really refreshing on a summer day!
DeleteLooks beautiful...I am trying this for sure this summer! Usually lemon or lime is all I do.
ReplyDeleteIt will be a hit at one of you pool parties, Michelle!
DeleteNever really thought of adding strawberries to my water, but it would mix things up a bit. Water does get dull!
ReplyDeleteGive it a try, Michelle...and don't forget the mint!
DeleteYou have convinced me, (despite the bloated goldfish visual!), but mainly because your photos are gorgeous and pictures don't lie! I've always wanted to be a posh and perfect hostess, and here's my chance - even if I end up guzzling the entire pitcher myself! At least I'll smell as sweet as strawberries!
ReplyDeletePoppy
If you do guzzle the entire pitcher, it will be guilt-free, Poppy!
DeleteThis looks really good - I will give it a try. My go to beverage these days is water since I stopped drinking so much diet coke. I usually just infuse lemon - but this sounds so refreshing!
ReplyDeleteI like it because it has a touch of sweetness, and the mint makes it taste really fresh.
DeleteYou and I do share a love for cheese, that I know, Claire! I love cucumber water, too. I usually make the Flat Belly Diet version, which has cucumber, mint, lemon and grated ginger. No vodka, though, but hmmmm....
ReplyDeleteI love the elegance of this and so simple. Genius!! Blessings, Catherine
ReplyDeleteThanks, Catherine! Anything that looks elegant and takes 30 seconds to make, is my kind of recipe!
DeleteLooks and sounds refreshing and delicious.
ReplyDeleteIt is, Dayle - next I'm going to use some melons and mint!
DeleteWow! Wonderful post! Looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteMarina from the south of Spain
Thanks, Marina! I'm going to make some with a different kind of fruit, next!

Thanks, BB's!
DeleteI keep seeing flavored water ideas everywhere. I think the universe is trying to tell me to try it! If it tastes as good as it looks I know I'll love it.
ReplyDeleteJennifer, it's definitely in the stars that you need to try a flavored water! It really does taste good!
DeleteYour strawberry water looks delicious and I'll add it to my list of yummy, healthy thirst quenchers. Thanks for the tip about not making it too far in advance. :) Visiting from Wow Us Wednesday
ReplyDeleteThanks, Babs! I found out the hard way, the first time I made it. Left it in the fridge for 24 hours, and the berries looked pretty terrible!
DeleteThis looks perfect for the next couple of hot summer days Amy! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt's a perfect summer drink, Vel! I'm going to try it with melon and mint, next!

ReplyDeleteThanks, Terri! It feels like a treat, but no calories!
