Avocado-Strawberry-Banana Smoothie

Avocado Strawberry Banana Smoothie: This is one super-healthy smoothie! | Ms. Toody Goo Shoes

Are you an avocado addict, like me?

I'm drawn to avocado recipes like a magnet.

I remember when people used to say,
"Don't eat avocados...they're fattening!"
Well, yeah, they've got fat, but it's the good fat --
the mono-unsaturated one -- not the evil fat.
In fact, it's the kind of fat that can actually prevent weight gain.
Yup. You read that right.

Now, you can't go and eat five avocados at a time...
they are high in calories, so that would have the opposite effect,
and besides, that's just gross.
Even I wouldn't do that.
But, small portions of mono-unsaturated fats eaten throughout the day
will keep you from feeling hungry.
If you're not noshing all day, you might just shed some pounds.

Speaking of losing weight, I'm on a mission.
Yes. Again.
I need to take off five pounds in the next several weeks.
This way, when I'm on vacation,
I won't feel so bad about the five pounds I'll probably put back on.

Soooo....if I'm going on a diet, I'm taking you with me.
Not literally, of course,
but I can't be baking up a storm for my blog, and then not eat it.
That kind of willpower I just don't have.
Therefore, it's going to be healthy stuff here at Ms. Toody's for awhile, ok?
Maybe I'll sneak in a little treat now and then.

Yesterday, I was out shopping for vacation clothes.
It was totally depressing, and I didn't buy anything.
I still want to dress like I'm forever 21,
and I'm surely not ready for frumpy old lady clothes.
Seems that there's not a lot of in between, at least to suit my taste.

All that disappointing shopping worked up an appetite.
I was craving a smoothie.
I grabbed the frozen strawberries, a frozen banana,
and just as I was about to reach for a container of yogurt,  I noticed an avocado.
Since it's a good mono-unsaturated fat,
it would satisfy me longer than the yogurt, so into the blender it went.

I've had avocado smoothies before, and they are YUMCIOUS!

You don't really taste the avocado, but it does have a distinct creaminess to it.
Avocados are actually a fruit...a berry, in fact!
Who knew?
They're high in fiber, potassium, and protein...
help to lower your bad cholesterol, improve your digestion and possibly prevent cancer.
Strawberries are good for your heart, bones, eyes, hair and nails.
Eating bananas boosts your mood, help to lower blood pressure, prevent heartburn and protect against type-2 diabetes.
Don't you feel healthy just reading about it?

My smoothie was so good, I made it again today.
I think you need to try it tomorrow.
After all, you are on my diet with me, right?

  2. Avocados are my favorites, and here's a helpful hint to ripening them. Place them in a brown paper bag (one of those old fashioned EHS lunch bags), with an apple - it really does speed up the process!

  3. That looks so good! I have never made a smoothie before. I have tried the ones that are sold in the freezer case that you add juice to and shake it. Does that count? I wish I liked avocados because they are good for you, but I don't. My husband likes them though. So, we do buy them from time to time. Good luck with your 5 lb weight loss. That shouldn't be too hard! I say just skip lunch and you're good. LOL!

  4. I love avocados, and I often have smoothies for lunch so thanks for this. Yesterday I had to throw away two though. Broke my heart I tell ya'. They ripened so quickly, maybe because of the humid weather? Speaking of which, are you not freezing now?! We had to take in our flowers in containers due to the expected frost. Crazy!

  7. Yes! I am an avocado freak, buying 4-5 of them a week at Aldi's cuz they are $.99 and then eating them with anything I can find. Also I am all over any recipe that mentions avocado (and cilantro - another recent passion of mine). I went clothes shopping for summer yesterday because I am sick of all my worn out stuff and I found NOTHING! Everything was really hideous. I bought a pair of capris that I will probably return! Anyways, I will be trying this recipe...SOON!

  9. I know it wil be hard to believe, but I have never, ever had a smoothie. I haven't ever wished to drink my calories, but this smoothie with avocado is very tempting. I'll let you know if I give it a whirl.
(Groan! Can you believe that I actually wrote that? The lowest form of humour etc etc!)

  10. Hi Amy ... i just love avocados and strawberries ... both great low carb higher (healthy) fat foods / fruits.

If you are a non diabetic banana's are cool, but if you are a diabetic they can quickly raise blood sugar levels which is not so cool! My husband a Type 2 diabetic would have way too high blood sugar levels enjoying this smoothie.

But hey how about avocado and prawns - a great lunch time or pre dinner treat.

Wish you well on the weight loss - vacations are fun

    All the best Jan

  12. Oh my daughter is going to love this...she eats avocados all the time! I love them too actually. I hear you on the clothes thing...these days everything I own seems to come from Title 9 or Athleta or a little clothing boutique downtown. I don't buy much because I tend to wear what I have forever!! :) Have fun on vacation!

  14. I certainly need to be on the diet with you, Amy, so keep it coming here. Never had a smoothie before either but I love avocado mousse. Oops, that recipe has cream in it. Not that I've banished cream from my fridge. I'm making strawberry Pavlova tomorrow, diet or no diet. It didn't get made for my birthday and I must have it or feel terribly deprived!
